The COVID Break benefitted the MCU

 

 

 

 

Take yourself back to the spring/summer of 2019.  10 years of the MCU concluded with a long, but mostly satisfying conclusion with Avengers: Endgame.  We all screamed and shouted when Cap picked up Mjolnir and we all got misty eyed when Tony/Iron Man snapped Thanos out of existence and died on the battlefield surrounded by his teammates and loved ones.  It was a conclusion 10 years in the making and, for the most part, gave fan service to hardcore fans and newbies alike to close the chapter on this version of the MCU.

 

Of course, Spider-Man Far From Home came after that as a little cherry on top; but for the most part, the chapter was closed and on the horizon was new movies from the House of Mouse and, let us be honest, those new offerings were not as tantalizing as what we had just witnessed.  A Black Widow movie that seemed about 7 years too late.  The Eternals(name one, I double dog dare you).  These movies were not exactly lighting up the blogosphere; especially when most comic fans were hoping for news and movies about the Fantastic Four and X-Men.

 

As we entered 2020, so did COVID 19 and it had no love loss for movies and movie theaters.  As the pandemic seemed to worsen day after day and month after month, gatherings for nerds and geeks began to disappear or get altered dramatically.  Comic bookstores went to drive up services- if they survived the pandemic at all.  Comic book conventions were cancelled.  And the upcoming slate of superhero movies were delayed or sent to VOD.

 

And while Disney DID announce a slate of new movies (still no mutants tho) with Blade, Thor, Fantastic Four, Dr Strange, and others, the biggest news was the slate of tv shows headed to Disney Plus- their new streaming service that was set to bridge the gaps between the movies.  But COVID delayed the production of everything and by the time we got our first MCU show on Disney Plus (WandaVision), it had been close to 18 months from Spider-Man and the debut of WandaVision.  That is/was a huge gap in time for nerds and geeks and I think it was greatly needed.

 

While I do not believe Comic Book Movie fans were suffering from movie fatigue; I do think that we all needed a break from the previous 10 years.  Think about what Endgame gave us and what it concluded.  We saw this culmination of 18 plus movies wrap up in a 3.5 hour bow and I think we were all tired- fans, filmmakers, critics,  and creators combined.  Following up Endgame with an out of continuity Black Widow movie and an Eternal movie would have felt like a letdown- no matter how good those movies are.  The COVID break acted like a big reset button for the MCU and fans alike. The saying is "absence makes the heart grow fonder" and this is a clear example.  We, as fans, had been spoiled a little bit having a movie come out like clockwork every few months.  It became routine, boring, predicatble.  Now, with the pandemic and having our ability to talk, discuss, blog, podcast, etc about those movies taken away, we have become more appreciative of what we had because it can be snapped away just like...

 

And I think that is why the hype for WandaVision has been so overwhelming; on top of the fact that is so well done.  We had time to heal from the conclusion of Endgame and learned to miss and appreciate those characters again.  Its why people are so over the top about Falcon and Winter Soldier and even the malaise that surrounded Black Widow and The Eternals have lifted a bit.  The world seems fresh and new again.  Nothing seems predictable and the world is now open to fresh and surprising things. (we still want our mutants, tho)

 

So as WandaVision comes to its conclusion in 2 weeks and Falcon and Winter Soldier leads us into summer 2021 and into Black Widow, Eternals, Shang -Chi, and Spider-Man, let us not forget those dry 18 months without the MCU.  Enjoy the new content- you never know when it might go away again.

Comics Plessy V Ferguson

Can separate be Equal?

Not to go all Supreme Court rulings on this blog, but the landmark case of Plessy V Ferguson set up a rule of law that stated that it was okay to discriminate as long as the facilities were equal.  Now we all know that is impossible to pull off and one group is always going to get the short end of the stick.

But can comic book characters be separate and equal?

Diversity, most importantly the lack of diversity, has always been an issue in the field of entertainment.  TV shows and movies tend to continually cater to Whites and often times Black or other characters of color are pushed to the side kick role or that of the sassy Black friend, the super intelligent Asian, or the token gay/lesbian character on the show.  Its a racial trope trotted out for the past 40 plus years and its as tired as the think pieces written about it.

But if you dig into comics- especial here recently, there is a new phenomenon of traditionally white characters, who are now Black, or a person of color , or female and it got me to thinking' "Are these characters the equal to their white counter-parts or are they just place holders until the White character comes back to take their place?

This is not a totally new phenomenon.  Jon Stewart and James Rhodes have played Green Lantern and Iron Man respectively, even tho Rhodey was given The War Machine armor which essentially made him the Black Iron Man.  Stewart, who has been appointed as the guardian of sector 2814, but often times is looked at as the Black Green Lantern because there are no other Black Green Lanterns.

More recently, Sam Wilson, AKA Falcon, has been serving as Captain America.  He is essentially still Falcon, but his stars and stripes costume and use of a shield has given him the title of Captain America.  But does anyone really view Falcon AS Captain America or is he Black Captain America?  Plus, with the reintroduction of Steve Rogers back into the Marvel Universe( current Hydra story not withstanding), does anyone think that Falcon will continue to be Captain America?

Even the Hulk is now the Totally Awesome Hulk, played by an Asian Character Amadeus Cho. And even tho he is still green, he is still looked at as the Asian Hulk and the clock is ticking as to when Bruce Banner will once again become the Hulk.

And as much as I love the character, Miles Morales AKA the Sensational Spider-Man is in the same boat.  If Marvel was committed to having Miles BE THE Spider-Man, then Peter Parker needs to go away.  Whether you kill him or depower him, he cannot be around.  This idea that Miles is the domestic Spider Man and Peter Parker is the International Spider-Man takes away from Miles and makes him the Black/Latino Spider-Man and that is unfortunate.

Hell even the current Ultimates book has been referred to as the Black Avengers because of course, the Avengers are still around. And Marvel doubled down by making A-Force( the female Avengers team).

Look some representation ( typically) is better than no representation and there needs to be a space for these characters.  My issue is why doesn't Marvel and DC support and help created new characters of color and push those characters to make them the equal to their white counterparts?  The comic universe is large enough to support and love these characters IF they are marketed and given stories that develop the character over time.

I am a fan of all the characters I talked about here.  I am also a huge fan of Kamala Khan as Captain Marvel, and America Chavez, as well. But the playing field is not even.  If the company is not going to allow the person of color to assume the role full time- not for a couple of years, then they are just place holders to tell a story.  To me, that's sad.  Many of these white characters have had these roles for 50 plus years.  Any and every possible story has been told with them. If you are not going to create new characters, then  why not let a new character hold the spot for the next 50 years? Explore their history and background.  Allow them to grow and develop without the white character looking over their shoulder ready to pounce and take back their spot as the "Real _____"   I love these characters, but they are most definitely separate but not equal and that is a huge disappointment for me.

Civil War 2: Bad Optics Boogaloo

So Marvel dropped Civil War 2 recently and I am going to spoil a major portion of the plot line and story so  if you want to remain spoiler free,  you should stop reading here.....

The plot of the book is that a new Inhuman has Minority Report powers.  He basically can see when a crime is going to occur and our heroes can be dispatched to heed off said threat before it happens.  I mean literally, Marvel is straight ripping off Minority Report!  Like Tom Cruise should be mad as shit when one of his Scientology Minions reads it to him.  Anyway, the first time, it works perfectly. Our heroes respond to threat, organize their plan ahead of time, and the celestial being that was gonna threaten Earth is dispatched to much rejoicing.

Later, tho when Tony Stark finds out about this new Inhuman and his power, the moral conundrum of "Would you kill baby Hitler?" arises and creates a minor difference of opinion between Iron Man and Captain Marvel. But what to do next is left open with Tony thinking we cannot punish people- even villains for things they may or may not do.  Captain Marvel feels that heroes should do whatever they can to save lives and the Earth.

The next time our Inhuman has a "vision", it revolves around Thanos and the Ultimates set out to meet the threat... this time however, there is a casualty on the battle field and a death..... James Rhodes or Rhodey, AKA War Machine is killed by the mad titan, Thanos.

Obviously, Tony is upset that his best friend has been killed and this hurt turns to anger when he finds out Captain Marvel used the Inhuman to ward off a threat from Thanos that may or may not have happened in the future.  That is your set up for the new series.... After all that tho, I been wondering, why did they kill ANOTHER Black guy in Civil War?

We talked about how the death of Bill Foster, AKA Black Goliath, was not really necessary and it seemed that the Marvel powers in charge felt the need to kill someone so they chose a character that nobody really cared about in Black Goliath.  It felt forced and the reaction of the heroes at the time was so cliche.  For real, like anyone of them cared about Black Goliath.

In looking to make a bigger impact( I guess), this time they kill Rhodey. I mean, ok... I guess. Yes, Rhodey is Tony's homeboy. And, yes, he is a hero in his own right, but does Marvel not see the bad optics here? I mean you take two  limited series- ten years apart, and the catalyst for the event is the death of a Black guy.  How does someone not have deja vu in the writing room?  Nobody thought this might be a bad idea or would look bad based of previous series history? There are many people that coulda been killed besides Rhodey. On top of that, nobody stays dead in comics. NOBODY! So you could kill anyone and retcon it later to fix it. So why Rhodey and Black Goliath gotta die?  Its because they are Black and disposable characters. Period.  Rhodey, even tho he has a history as Tony's buddy/sidekick, was deemed expendable as a plot device when any number of characters could have fit that role to move the story along.

This speaks to the much larger issue of the lack of POC in comics and other forms of media/entertainment and their relevance.  Its become a trope where the Black characters in predominantly white situations in movies and tv, are often the first person voted off the island, kicked out of the house, or flat out killed off.  Black people watch these shows with one eye open because we know at any moment, this person of color is about to get killed.  I always tell people to date POC characters in media, but don't marry them because you are going to be widowed.  Marvel and DC both do not see this.  They think its just a point to tell a good story without realizing how fucked up it looks to people on the outside.

Who knows how this plays out in the long run of the series.  Maybe Rhodey really isn't dead. Maybe he's a clone. Or a Skrull. Or maybe the power of white, princess love, Captain Marvel will bring him back to life and we all sing Kumbaya with Thanos at the end.  Who really knows?!  But I know this, when Civil war 3 hits in 2026, every living Black Marvel hero better be looking over they shoulder because Death could be standing right behind them.

Meet the Creators: Sanford Greene

Met up with the artist on the relaunched Power Man and Iron Fist- Sanford Greene at the South Carolina Comic Con.  I had a chance to talk to him about football in the state of South Carolina( which he lives), how working on Power Man and Iron Fist with the writer who is all the way across the country( writer David Walker lives in Portland). And most importantly, I asked him about his views on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Gambit still not in Production

Gambit moved, 2 new Fox release dates

Not that it was lost in the news that Fox announced two new movie dates for October  2017 and January 2018, was the fact that Gambit was moved off its October 2016 date and that the film is not yet in production.  The Gambit movie, set to star with Channing Tatum as Gambit, has been troubled from the beginning. There have been script rewrites, 2 directors have dropped out, and there is a sense of general uneasiness my many fanboys and fangirls about Tatum's ability to play our favorite Cajun mutant. Top that off with an alleged 125 million dollar budget and the overwhelming success of Deadpool this winter, it seems the Gambit movie is again in development hell.  Both new dates would work for the Gambit movie and my thought would be October 2017 to give the movie a less stressed production schedule.

We at @brothascomics( well at least 4/5th of us) have been on the record for many months now that we are not sure that the movie should even be made. We feel that the character is a bit 2 dimensional and he may not translate onto the big screen well.  If nothing else, introduce the character into an established Xmen movie before spinning him off into a solo movie.  Its a huge risk on Fox's part- to me even bigger than Deadpool- because most peoples impressions of Gambit are based on the 1992 Xmen cartoon!  And even tho that character was quite fun, its a marked difference from the comic version and you would assume a total 180 degree change from the movie version.

So where does Gambit go from here?  This seems like a passion project for Channing Tatum.  I do not think the movie gets made at all if he drops out of it.  Very similar to Ryan Reynolds with Deadpool, Tatum seems committed to making this movie happen- even with all the roadblocks and challenges the movie has already seen.  Besides the super rushed schedule it would have been under, these are my thoughts as to why the date was moved.

1. More script issues.  They have decided to tell an origin story and those can be tricky AND Gambit's origin is kinda kooky.  It seems the original script was gonna deal with the Thieves and Assassins Guild and his relationship with Bella Donna. Maybe Fox sees that as too similar to Deadpool and Vanessa.  Do they stick with that or go in another direction?  Possibly new director Doug Liman has a vision for the character that differs from previous script writers and they are taking their time to get it fixed so they are not writing script while they film which almost always turns out bad.

2. Budget. Deadpool just proved you can get bank for your buck at under $100 million production budget.  Gambit was projected at $125 million.  Do they go back and scale it back to a more reasonable budget? I wasn't sure this movie needed that big of a budget to begin with- especially if you're doing Thieves Guild stuff and without a major villain( at least yet to be revealed).

3, R Rating. Script rewrite also make take the movie in a different direction.  Gambit, in New Orleans... Mardi Gras scenes... could make for some sex,  nudity, and language changes for a character that actually could support those type of shenanigans. Plus #FoxgonnaFox and since Deadpool was R and was successful, they may attempt to copy that!

All in all, I am still skeptical this movie gets made. I  have already resolved myself to the fact that its going to be Channing Tatum. Who knows, he may surprise us all and pull it off. I think the bigger worry is if there is enough built in interest in the character to support this solo effort and what its actually going to look like when it makes it on screen.  What I do know is the problems surrounding this movie are real and if they move forward without fixing them, we could have another Green Lantern on our hands and nobody wants to relive that shit!

Counselor Interview

Marvel: Civil War Issue 1

As we did with Legion Quest to get you ready for Xmen: Apocalypse, @brothascomics is going to walk you down issue by issue to Captain America: Civil War, looking at the comics that inspired the movie( well, at least the title).

Civil War: Issue 1

The book opens in the control room of a tv studio and flashes to a neighborhood in Stamford, Connecticut.  The New Warriors are the stars of a hero reality show and the shows is capturing their every move- including any potential battles with super villains.  The Warriors have rolled up on a list of villains on the FBI's most wanted and Speedball, the leader of the team, wants to take them on- against the protest of some of his teammates.  But the New Warriors need positive press for their reality show and against better judgement attack the villains.

It all seems to be going well but the main bad guy of the group, Nitro has escaped and the New Warriors are in hot pursuit.  Nitro, a being who can make himslef explode, is caught by Namorita in front of a local elementary school.  Nitro is not about to be taken down by the cousin of Sub Mariner and explodes himself in front of the school and on live television for everyone to see.  He kills Namorita and between 800-900 other people including most of the children at the school.

The book then shifts to the aftermath and the clean-up as heroes have come to the scene.  Xmen, Avengers, Fantastic Four, and others are all there and each of them has an opinion on what happened, why it happened and what the future holds.  The seeds of discontent are planted early between Iron Man and Captain America with each believing change is coming on how society views and deals with its heroes.

The public's reaction is swift and extreme.  People and the government want the heroes to be accountable for the damage they cause and the lives that are loss protecting them from evil doers.  A funeral affects Tony Stark/Iron Man the most and the movement for super heroes to be registered begins.

This leads to a huge, super hero pow-wow at the Baxter Building-home to the Fantastic Four.  In that meeting, there are large discussions on how to move forward with no real consensus. Some heroes believe in registration, while others are adamantly against it.

Meanwhile, SHIELD is pursuing registration under the watch of Maria Hill and she looks to get Captain America on her side.  Cap is totally against registration and he lets Maria Hill know it and she informs Cap that if he is not working for her, then he is against SHIELD and the US government and moves to have Captain America arrested. Captain America escapes and flees the SHIELD Hellicarrier!

When news gets back to Iron Man that Cap has gone rogue, he decides its his responsibility to bring Cap in!

That's the end of issue 1. Looking back, this series is almost 10 years old and it still holds up well. Even tho they undo much of it over time, when it came out originally, the story was fresh and different and all the side books with the battles between heroes was fun to watch and read.  Captain America taking the side of individual freedom has played out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I am curious to how they weave this story around Winter Soldier to pit Iron Man VS Captain America.

Deadpool puts DC on notice

@brothascomics was blown away by the success of Deadpool at the box office.  I am sure Marvel and Fox, in their most truthful moments, never expected the movie to do so well.  And lastly, I am certain executives over at DC had no inkling that Deadpool would become this huge monetary and critical success.

The success of Deadpool now places an enormous amount of pressure on Batman V Superman.  Granted, there was already pressure.  The pressure to make a good movie, coupled with box office expectations, in addition to the movie being the tentpole for DC Cinematic moving forward.  The pressure was already there.  But by Deadpool getting out first AND making such a huge box office splash, it now ramps up the expectations for BvS.  Deadpool is well on its way to making close to $300 million on a budget of about $60 million.  Fox/Marvel took a character, who is not a well know house hold name, and turned him into a superstar.  BvS stars the holy Trinity for DC and has more guest stars than a Pete Rock CD.  The alleged production budget on the movie is well over $200 million- making it the most exspensive comic book movie ever made.  DC needs the movie to be profitable for many reasons but it also cannot make less domestic than Deadpool at the box office.  That would be an epic fail for DC Cinematic and quite embarrassing moving forward with their properties.

There is already news out there that DC is nervous about the movie.  Executive speaking on conditions of anonymity are saying the movie response interanlly "has not been what they wanted" This could mean many things, but if comic book movies have taught us anything, nervous executives will  tinker with movies and take away the vision the writers and directors had for the movie. Movie executives only think about money and have no vision and they will meddle in the filmaking process with only money in mind. We learned this on Age of Ultron and on Fantastic Four. And from the outside looking in, BvS looks to have a lot of chefs in the kitchen which is why the movie looks overfull of characters and action, with a very small hint of the story surrounding it all.

So what happens if BvS shits the bed? And by shit the bed, I mean it does $200-300 million domestic.  Suicide Squad is already in the can and Wonder Woman is in production.  If the movie under performs, will we even see a Justice League movie? Aquaman? Cyborg? Green Lantern Corps? How much does BvS need to make to justify DC Cinematic moving forward?  Its a great question and one DC was thinking they would never have to ask.  Deadpool has changed everything moving forward!

I have been on the record for months that I am scared of this movie. I do not trust DC. I do not trust the director. And I do not trust their vision.  The movie has seemed rushed from the beginning and nothing I have seen from the trailers leads me to think otherwise.  But I have also said that I hope that I am wrong.  I want to be wrong here.  I want DC to make a great BvS movie! As fans, we all win when studios put out great movies.  Plus it will force Marvel to step up their game if they view DC as a legitimate threat to their movie empire.  But I am a firm believer of where there is smoke, there is fire. If these leaks from executives are real, this movie is in trouble and in turn the whole DC Cinematic Universe is in trouble.  And who knew the Merc with a Mouth would be to blame!

Original Secret Wars: Part 1

With the conclusion of the Hickman Secret Wars(2015), @brothascomics is gonna take a a look back at the original Secret Wars.  Developed primarily as a tool for Marvel to sell toys, the series winds up having significant impact on the Marvel Universe. It spawns an awful sequel in Secret War 2, but the influence of the original lives on as evident by the homage to the original by Hickman's Secret Wars

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will review issues 1-12 and host a podcast to discuss the series.  So grab a Jolt Cola and sit back and enjoy the recaps.

Prior to the start of the series, all the heroes are drawn to Central Park because of this large construct that has appeared in the park.  One by one, the heroes enter and are transported into space and wind up all together and confused as to how they wound up in space.

Representing the heroes the Avengers, the Xmen, the Fantastic Four( minus Sue Richards), Spider man, Hulk, and for a reason that will become apparent later, Magneto.  For some reason the heroes feel  the need to introduce themselves and Wasp, who is leader of the Avengers at the time, does so in the most arrogant way possible.  It must be noted that Iron Man is James Rhodes at this time and The Hulk is smart and under the control of Bruce Banner.

At the same time, the villains have been transported as well to a different construct.  Its implied that many of the villains were taken from their homes or prison and transported unlike the heroes who went in voluntarily.  At the same time, the heroes are kinda confused as to why Magneto is with them and not on the other construct.  The Xmen, Xavier in particular, are very protective of Magneto even tho he is not trying to be a hero.

While trying to figure all of this out, the power of the Beyonder is revealed.  He begins to destroy one galaxy to make another( Battleworld).  His power on full display shocks and awes everyone.

Once Battleworld is formed, finally the Beyonder speaks.  He speaks of this great battle and that if you slay your villains, you will get whatever you choose.

Galactus is the first to act.  Wanting to end his constant huger for planets, he charges out towards the source of the Beyonder's power.  Dr. Doom, who is curious as well as power hungry, follows shortly after as they fly towards the Beyonder.

Of course the Beyonder has God like powers and swats the both of them back to Battleworld like its nothing.  For Doom, this is his wake up call.  The power of the Beyonder is so great that even he does not think anyone should challenge him directly.  

Meanwhile, the heroes are looking to find a leader for this upcoming battle.   But first they need to decide what to do with Magneto.  No one besides the Xmen want him there and its become a tense situations between the heroes.  Eventually, Magneto feels attacked and decides to fight back and deuces the heroes to do his own thing.

After Magneto leaves, the heroes decide they must have a leader for this upcoming battle.  Many names are tossed around, but eventually they settle on Captain America to lead the team.

As Doom heads back to the villain base after his Beyonder smack down, he is formulating what to do next.  Doom recognizes the power and how very little he could do to challenge the Beyonder on his own. He plans to seek out Reed Richards to formulate some plan to stop the Beyonder.  of course his villain co horts want to challenge the heroes so they can win the prize the Beyonder is offering.  This is insulting to Doom and he attacks the villains and plans to fly to see Reed.  Kang, thinks that is a bitch ass move and shoots down Dooms ship when it leaves the base.

As the heroes move to check out the explosion that took down Doom's ship, the villains move in to attack and we end issue one on a cliffhanger before the first battle between hero and villains.

That ends issue #1.  As much as I love this series, its kind of a mess in parts and it definitely shows its age when you re-read it.  Villains and heroes a like are constantly invoking their own name and the idea of thought boxes all over the place is 20 80's and 90's comics.  I think a major point people miss when looking pack is how sorry the villains are, tho.  I mean the Wrecking Crew? Lizard?  Kang and Dr. Doom are solid and powerful enough to take on the heroes by themselves.  And of course Galactus can hold his own against anyone.  Meanwhile the heroes are stacked with all their most powerful heroes AND the Hulk.  Not a fair fight at all.

But solid effort. Looking forward to issue #2.
