On this Date: December 18, 1982: The End of the Scoopy Doo and Scrappy Doo Show

 

If you are a child of the 80's... and well television in general, there are several moments when a long standing show, which may be fading in popularity will add a new character to give the show a new look and to help it from becoming stale.

The most popular or better yet least popular is Cousin Oliver from the Brady Bunch.  A character so reviled by fans, it essentially ended the show.  This is Called the Cousin Oliver Syndrome in television circles and you would think tv executives would learn, but they never do.

The Scooby Doo franchise had been running for along time on Saturday mornings through a few different shows.  From the OG Scooby Doo Where Are You(1969) through the Scooby Doo Movies (72-73) and a couple other shows.  The Scooby crew was a cash cow but like everything it can get stale.  Well someone at Hanah Barbara was like, " lets introduce a younger, more annoying Scooby".  And we get Scrappy Doo in 1978.  Cousin Oliver is like Obama to Trump in popularity.  Scrappy is hated by everyone.  From his catch phrase to his " Let me at em".  Nobody is/was a fan of Scrappy!  The character was hated so much, he was made the villian in the Scobby Doo Movie.  Yet ABC and Hannah Barbara gave Scooby and Scrappy another show from 1982-1985 which essentially killed off Scooby Doo for 3 years until a Pup Named Scooby Doo( which is amazing btw) in 1988.

So long Scrappy!  We hate your Puppy Power chant and hope that you never darken the Scooby verse again
